The way to greet a Muslim is to say :

  • Asalaamu alykum: Peace be upon you
  • Asalaamu alykum wa rahmatu’Allaah: Peace and Mercy of Allaah be upon you
  • Asalaamu alykum wa rahmatu’Allaahe wa barakaatu: Peace, Mercy and blessings of Allaah be upon you. 

‘Salaam’ means peace. So when you greet someone with the statement of ‘peace’ you’re just saying ‘peace.’

Thank you for saying ‘peace’, but bless the person with the statement that is putting peace upon them. What’s more beautiful than that. What’s more beautiful than wishing peace upon someone.
